plant based fur
The fashion industry is the third most polluting in the world after fuel and agriculture. Every year we go through cycles of overproduction and overconsumption, each time adding to an ever-growing mountain of waste. In this context, blind consumerism must be replaced by sustainable solutions.
DevoHome has created hemp fur, a plant-based fabric that resembles natural sheep wool that can become an alternative to animal and synthetic furs. By switching to hemp fur, which is vegan, hypoallergenic and biodegradable we can:
· Reduce the suffering of animals slaughtered in the production of natural furs and reduce carbon emissions from other animals like sheep bred for wool production.
· Reduce the number of microplastics washed into our waterways, which are shed from synthetic textiles.
· Improve land quality, as growing hemp does not require pesticides or herbicides.
· Encourage responsible consumption by producing an eco-friendly, durable but biodegradable product.
Animal fur can perform several important functions including protection and sensory, with the main one being thermo-regulation. Many animals have a so-called double-coat, with a layer of fine shorter fur close to the skin and a layer of longer coarser hair protecting the shorter layer. This structure can help in colder climates by forming an almost airtight layer close to the skin, while in hotter regions the longer fur can prevent the heat of the sun reaching the skin.
DevoHome had successfully copied real animal fur while at the same time avoiding the problems associated with both animal and synthetic fur.
Now, we have produced 100% biodegradable Hemp Fur with knitted base made of natural cotton knit. It is a fully vegan fur that can be widely used in fashion and interior design.
